To help students retain a connection with their home language and culture, the school offers three hours of language instruction a week for children with Dutch or French as their mother tongue. This provision will expand during Term 2.
Mother tongue classes are scheduled against Islamic Education where possible, otherwise they are held after school and are taught in groups comprising students of same or similar age, allowing children of the same age from different classes to develop their home language together. Native speakers recreate the feeling of learning language as if the children were in their ‘home’ country and include elements of geography, history and traditions as well as language. New mother tongue groups continue to join the programme.
